Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md at the start of every session. This starter imports AGENTS.md with a single line, so every coding agent in the repository follows one set of instructions, and keeps a short section for what only Claude Code needs.
What to change
- Put it at the root of the repository (or at .claude/CLAUDE.md), beside an AGENTS.md. The AGENTS.md starter on this shelf is made to sit next to it.
- No AGENTS.md? Delete the first line and write your project's instructions here instead.
- Replace the placeholders in angle brackets, then delete any line that does not apply.
- Aim for under 200 lines: a longer file costs context and is followed less reliably.
- Both files end with the same optional section. Keep it in one of them, or delete it from both.
